Stage 1 Program - Habitats
Program overview
Whether it’s the smallest “mini beasts” or the giants of our oceans, all animals have the same requirements for life. They need food, water and shelter. On this program students investigate a variety of habitats along Narrabeen Lagoon and learn how those ecosystems provide for the needs of our native animals big and small.
This is a hands-on day filled with investigations and creativity that will get any child engaged the natural world.
Syllabus inquiry questions
• How can we investigate living things in the sky, in the water and on the land?
• What are the requirements of a habitat to sustain living systems?
• What are the features of, and activities in, places?
• How can we protect our local environment?
Learning experiences
Bilarong Reserve, Narrabeen Lagoon
Our experienced educators will facilitate 4-5 activities around Narrabeen Lagoon at Bilarong Reserve. This will be planned by our team and communicated to you in advance of the excursion date. Activities include:
• Dip netting to find living things in the lagoon
• Bird watching with binoculars
• Minibeast exploration
• Clay creature creations and classification
• Building insect habitat
