A socially sustainable and inclusive community for all
Better Together 2040 is our social sustainability strategy. It sets out what we're working towards to 2040, and how we'll get there with the community, the social services sector and other levels of government.
We adopted the first strategy in 2021. In 2026, we reviewed it, tested it with the community and refreshed it.
What we know about our community
Good decisions start with good evidence. We publish research on what's changing across the Northern Beaches, who's under pressure and why. Anyone working in this space can use it.
Our 4 strategic directions
Through the Community Strategic Plan, the community set out its vision for the Northern Beaches. A safe, diverse, inclusive and connected community that lives in balance with our extraordinary coastal and bushland environment.
Our 4 strategic directions come straight from that vision. Each one has focus areas, based on where the evidence says pressure is building.
A safe communityPreventing harm, supporting mental health and helping people find support before they reach crisis point. |
An inclusive communityRemoving the barriers that stop people taking part, because not everyone starts from the same place |
A diverse communityCultural inclusion, representation, and services and spaces that are culturally safe. |
A connected communityBelonging, participation and the networks that hold a community together. |
Action plans
The strategy sets the direction. The action plans set out what we'll actually do, with one for each direction. We develop them with the community and the sector, and each one goes to the Council for endorsement.
Keeping them separate means we can update our actions as things change, without reopening the strategy every few years.
How we're going
We report on Better Together each year and take a fuller look every 5 years. Our reports cover what we delivered, who it reached and whether conditions in the community are shifting.

Measuring community wellbeing
Our Community Wellbeing Framework tracks how the community is faring across a broad set of measures. It shows us whether the conditions Better Together is working towards are actually improving.
