For all ages from 5 years + (children under 12 will need to be accompanied by a parent / guardian).

This inter-generational workshop is a rare opportunity for artists from young to old to learn from Archibald Prize winner, Dhunghatti artist Blak Douglas.

In part one of this workshop join Blak Douglas on an artist-led tour of his exhibition Inverted Commoners: Gayamay (Manly Cove) at MAG&M, gaining insights into the making process and inspiration for the works. In part two have a go at creating an artwork of your own to take home! Learn from Blak Douglas as he instructs on how to create one of his iconic flat-bottomed clouds in his signature style, and discover the metaphor behind his use of these clouds in his award winning paintings.

About Blak Douglas

Born Adam Douglas Hill to a Dhungatti Aboriginal father and Caucasian mother, Blak was trained in illustration and photography before becoming a self–taught painter. Blak is an artist who works with a genuine intent to make a change. His practice spans across painting, sculpture and installation and has allowed his message to be accepted by a broad audience wanting to engage in the big issues that affect modern Australia.

A classically trained Yidaki player, he has performed prolifically including on Australian Idol, The Rugby World Cup opening ceremony, and the welcome for Nelson Mandela. In 2022, Blak won the AGNSW Archibald Prize, and was the 2021 winner of the Still: National Still Life Award 2021 and the 2019 winner of the prestigious Kilgour Prize. Blak's unique vision of this country’s history and current social inequities is an important one. Profound in its delivery — the graphic nature of his practice, and attention to visual allegory has captured the attention of audiences throughout Australia.
