Program Overview
Warriewood Wetlands is a unique natural oasis on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, surrounded by an increasingly urban landscape. On this guided fieldwork excursion, students explore this rich wetland ecosystem and discover the diverse plants and animals that have adapted to thrive within it. Working alongside expert educators, students observe and identify native species while developing an appreciation for the importance of biodiversity.
Students investigate the challenges facing wetlands, including the impacts of urban development and introduced plant and animal species. Through firsthand observations, they develop an understanding of how these pressures affect sensitive ecosystems and explore the vital role wetlands play in supporting wildlife, improving water quality, and maintaining healthy Australian environments.

Learning experiences
- Changing Environments – Using historical aerial photographs and an interactive 3D model of Warriewood, students investigate how the area has changed over time and examine the impacts of urbanisation on wetland ecosystems.
- Adaptations – Through guided observations and hands-on activities, students explore the unique structural and behavioural adaptations that enable plants and animals to survive and thrive in a wetland environment.
- Food Webs – Venturing deeper into the wetlands, students identify native plants and animals and construct a food web to investigate the complex interconnections and relationships within this ecosystem.
Introduced Species – After identifying introduced plant species in the wetlands, students participate in a collaborative investigation to explore the impacts of invasive weeds on biodiversity, habitat quality, and ecosystem health.

- ST3-SCI-01 uses evidence to explain how scientific knowledge can be used to develop sustainable practices
- ST3-PQU-01 poses questions to identify variables and conducts fair tests to gather data
- ST3-DAT-01 interprets data to support explanations and arguments
