Program overview

Join our expert educators to understand the connection between energy production and climate change. Students will discover how electricity is generated, understand the impacts it has on the climate and the important role renewable energy plays. Students will have hands on experience designing and creating solar powered cars (and racing them!). They will also build wind turbines and create water power.

Syllabus inquiry questions

  • How do physical conditions affect the survival of living things?
  • How do the structural and behavioural features of living things support survival?

Learning experiences

Energy Efficiency

Part 1 of the day will focus on renewables and the positive changes that can be made to combat climate change. The students will investigate solar, hydro and wind power and create first hand alternatives to electricity.

Impact of Climate Change in Australia

Part 2 will look at the impact of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef and carry out an ocean acidification experiment which will demonstrate the long term effects.

Sustainability

Part 3 will focus on sustainability. Students will investigate the life of the steel can and enter into a debate by all stake holders into the need for this item.
