Program overview

One of the most beautiful spots to spend the day, Long Reef Headland. The natural beauty of the area, which often provides a vantage point for a variety of marine life, including dolphins and whales, has a wonderful story to tell of how the land changes over time. The students will explore why and how our coastal landscape is changing. They will also look into geological changes through the following hands on activities - weather testing - rock investigation – extreme weather analysis. Truly wonderful examples of geographical processes.

Syllabus inquiry questions

  • How do different views about the environment influence approaches to sustainability?
  • How can people use places and environments more sustainably?
  • How does the environment support the lives of people and other living things?

Learning experiences

  • A guided walk around the headland gives students the opportunity to observe and reflect on the cause and effect of both natural and man-made changes.
  • An investigation into management of coastal weathering and erosion that occurs slowly over time or very suddenly during a major weather event. Using the Collaroy storm damage as an example.
  • Students can partake in a guided exploration of Long Reef rock pool and discover the abundance of species that survive in this unique and challenging intertidal habitat. Students experience first-hand how the physical conditions of the environment affect the marine invertebrates that live there.
