Summer Rain

Summer Rain is an emerging singer-songwriter, crafting heartfelt songs that blend soul, folk and pop influences. With honest storytelling and a voice that draws listeners in, Summer writes music that captures the highs and lows of growing up, love, and self-discovery.

In 2025, Summer was the winner of the Northern Composure Unplugged (Judges Choice Platinum 18-24 years) and is now in the process of recording and releasing new original music, including her song Unfold. Summer’s captivating songwriting and engaging performances have now cemented her as one to watch in the local music scene.

How did you first get into music?

Although musical talent hasn’t really run in my family, I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. My earliest memory of performing on stage was around age 5 - I was on holidays at a caravan park and got up at an open mic to sing Firework by Katy Perry. The stage looked so big back then, but it probably wasn’t haha! A few years later, my mum enrolled me in a children’s choir, and I haven’t stopped singing since.

Do you write your own songs? If so, what is your songwriting process like?

I do write my own songs, yes! I have been busy in the studio for the past couple months writing and producing new music, which is due to come out very soon, which I’m super excited for. Usually when I write my songs, it starts on the guitar. I’m usually mucking around with chords I want to use and humming melodies over them. Then I think about what I want the song to be about, although sometimes I have ideas for what I want to write about before I pick up the guitar. Once I’ve jotted down lots of ideas around the songs theme, I pick together my flow for the song, by noting what each section of the song will portray. Finally, I piece together the melody and lyrics and make them flow nicely.

How do you handle mistakes during a performance?

If I make a mistake during a performance, I just try to move on and pretend nothing happened! Most of the time the audience doesn’t even notice - especially if you don’t draw attention to it. You can’t be perfect all the time, and the audience understands that. I’ve found that the more experience you get, the better you become at handling little slip-ups and keeping the performance flowing.

What motivated you to enter the Northern Composure Unplugged?

Originally when I saw Unplugged was running again, I didn’t think I was able to apply because I was meant to be in New Zealand for all the heats. But kind of luckily, my trip had to be cancelled literally the night the entries were closing. So, when I knew I wouldn’t be travelling, I applied straight away. To be honest, I didn’t really think anything would come out of it as I’d done Unplugged a couple years ago and was unsuccessful, but I try to apply for every opportunity that I find because you never know what the outcome could be, and even if you don’t win anything, it’s just so good to put yourself out there and get more experience.

What was your experience like during the competition, and how did it feel to win?

Unplugged was such a supportive and inspiring environment that I’m so lucky and grateful I was a part of. Some of the talent that is coming out of the Beaches is incredible and it was great to hear music from other local artists too.

I had the best time performing in front of the Unplugged crowds and sharing my original music, especially with an audience that was so intently listening. I didn’t expect to win, but I was really happy with how the performance went, so no matter what the outcome was, I was leaving with a smile on my face.

When they did announce me as the winner I was over the moon and I’m so thankful for the opportunities that have come from it. It was such a special moment, and it has given me the confidence booster that I needed to share more of my original music.

How has winning Northern Beaches Unplugged impacted your career so far?

Winning Northern Beaches Unplugged has been amazing and allowed me to record new music, including the original song I performed on the night, ‘Unfold’, which will be out on Spotify soon. I’m so grateful to Unplugged for giving me that opportunity. It’s also led to more local performance opportunities and, most importantly, it’s reassured me that my songs truly connect with people — which has been the biggest motivation to keep creating and pushing forward.

What are your immediate and long-term goals as a musician?

My immediate goal is to release the songs I’ve been recording and share them with a wider audience. I’d also love to put on a headline show to celebrate the release and connect with listeners in person. Long term, I’d love to keep writing, releasing and performing my own music, tour nationally (and eventually internationally), and continue building a sustainable career as an artist where I can grow with my audience and create music that resonates deeply with people.
