Council is seeking public feedback on the naming of a lookout in Balgowlah, as Guganagina Lookout being the Sydney Aboriginal word for Kookaburra.

The park located at the corner of West Street has sweeping views over North Harbour towards Manly.

The proposed name aims to recognise the area’s Aboriginal history and connection to nature, with the kookaburra being commonly sighted in the area.

The word Guganagina is taken from the book The Sydney Language by Professor Jakelin Troy (1993) a linguist and Director of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Portfolio at the University of Sydney. The word lists detailed in her book were compiled during the early years of the colony, largely by officers of the First Fleet.

The Aboriginal Heritage Office was consulted in identifying a suitable name for the Lookout.

If the name is adopted by Council, interpretive signage will be installed at the location explaining the name, the significance of the site and its connection to Aboriginal history.
