Moving can be stressful and often comes with a clean out and cull of items no longer needed.

Abandoning these items on the curb, even with a sign offering it to neighbours with a “free to a good home” sign, is illegal and you risk a hefty fine by dumping it there.  Instead make life easier, with this easy 6 step guide to moving and clearing out.

Give it away

Think about friends, family and neighbours who might be interested in your pre-loved items. Post on local social media groups or specialist interest circles like parents, sporting or camping groups.

Offer it for sale

Good condition items could be someone else’s treasure, so sell online and make some money. Alternatively, Council run several second-hand markets such as Avalon Car Boot Sale and Bags to Riches in Dee Why a stall will only cost you $18.20.

Find a good cause

Many local charities welcome good condition pre-loved goods to raise money to help others. Or donate to the Library of Things in Cromer where members can borrow items. Check their website to see what they’re currently accepting.

Repurpose it

Take bikes, toys and soft furnishings to groups whose volunteers repair and repurpose items based locally at Kimbriki. Or take items to the Cromer Fixery Café next month where volunteers will help repair them.

Recycle it

Council holds regular recycling drop offs at Warringah Aquatic Centre partnering with local for-purpose groups who recycle or reuse bikes, electrical, timber, clothing, homewares, furniture and metal. Check online to see what you can drop off at each event.

Book a Council clean up

For large end-of-life items, use Council’s easy-to-use Bulky Goods Collection Service. Each household is entitled to 2 collections in a 12-month period, but book in advance to secure your preferred date. Apartments have a communal or a per-unit system - check with your Strata Manager or do a property search online for your units next available collection date.

Planning in advance on how to part with your unwanted items will make moving or cleaning out a breeze and help you avoid the temptation to abandon items and cop a fine.
