Saturday 25 November marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, and it’s an important time to shine a light on the issue of domestic violence.

One in four women have experienced violence by a partner since the age of 15 (ABS, 2023). Despite this, domestic violence affects people from all communities, ages, cultures and genders.

Everyone has the right to live without fear from violence, but what can you do to prevent domestic violence?

Knowing the warning signs of domestic violence can be a good first step, so you can know what to watch out for and what you can do to help.

  1. Physical injuries: Unexplained bruises, cuts or injuries are red flags you shouldn’t ignore. Frequent injuries with inconsistent explanations may be a cause for concern.
  2. Withdrawal: Victims often isolate themselves from their loved ones. If a family or friend who was once social and outgoing becomes withdrawn, it could be a sign that something is wrong.
  3. Emotional abuse: Look out for signs of anxiety, depression or unexplained changes in mood.
  4. Control and manipulation: Excessive control and manipulation by a partner can come in many different forms: controlling finances, monitoring phone calls, and cutting off their family and friends.
  5. Financial abuse: If a loved one has restricted access to money, or manipulates their financial decisions, this can be financial abuse.
  6. Fear: Victims may show signs of fear or anxiety around their partner. If you notice a loved one consistently expressing fear of a partner’s reaction this could be a sign of an abusive relationship.
  7. Unexplained absences: A victim may try to conceal signs of abuse by not attending work or social events.

Victims of domestic violence often face many barriers to escaping abuse. Be a safe space for them and where you can, tell them about local support services that can help. They’re available on our website, where you can also find links to resources on how to support victims. You can also find information about local support services via the Northern Beaches Domestic Violence Network.

If you or anyone you know needs support, call 1800 RESPECT.
