We want to reward your commitment to Sustainability!
Every year, Northern Beaches Council applauds both our local businesses and the eco volunteers in the community who do their bit for sustainability. That’s why we sponsor a special business Sustainability Award alongside the prestigious annual Northern Beaches Local Business Awards; and host the annual Eco Awards and awards night.
Business Sustainability Award
The Northern Beaches Local Business Awards are a community accolade for business excellence. But the Northern Beaches Council Sustainability Award is more: it’s a discretionary award that showcases your business for actively pursuing sustainable practices.
The award highlights excellence in embedding sustainability practices in business planning, operations and marketing. We had a great response with over 20 applications last year, this highlights the growing importance of environmental sustainability in local businesses. Congratulations to all our award winners.
Anyone can nominate a business for the Sustainability and Inclusion Award, including customers, community members, businesses owners and staff. Self-nominations are also welcome. Submissions closed 9 September 2020.
Modus Operandi - Winner
This microbrewery located in Mona Vale demonstrates significant innovation and measured environmental benefits. This includes development of preservative-free craft beer in a can rather than a bottle as well as inventing an Australian first bar-top can seamer. Their products are made of 96% recycled material and are produced using 100% Green Energy. A significant contribution to our local community and environment includes producing a dedicated brew with a 20 cent donation to charity, running their own Clean Up Australia Day event and working with local farmers to reuse spent grain for livestock. Modus Operandi is expanding its operations to Newcastle with state-of-the-art environmental facilities.
Blackmores - Runner Up
Blackmores is based in Warriewood Business Park and continues to show outstanding leadership across environmental and social pillars. They have set ambitious targets for net zero emissions by 2030, which align with Council’s recently adopted Environment Strategy and are adopting their own clean energy strategy. They are continuing to make significant waste reductions through their bulky transfer technology and use of recycled paper. One of the largest employers on the Northern Beaches they instil environmental and community values in their staff, including staff clothing swaps, recycling master classes and supporting local Ozharvest. Their charity and human rights advocacy extend across Australia and overseas, including $2 million raised for charities and causes (Red Cross Bushfire, WIRES, Buy a Bale and modern slavery).
