Thumbnail

A small to large, spreading, densely shading tree, often wider than it is tall. Upper surface of the leathery, oval-shaped leaves is smooth, shiny and dark green and the underside is velvety and rust-coloured.

Bark on the trunk and limbs is smooth and grey and when the tree matures, buttresses often form at the base of the trunk.

Scientific Name

Ficus rubiginosa

Conditions

The species prefers a rich fertile soil and has high water needs, particularly during Summer. Grows in full sun to partial shade and is well suited to rainforest areas. Withstands coastal exposure but needs protection from strong winds. Suitable only for large gardens or parks as roots can become invasive.
