Cromer resident Dave is doing his part to reduce food waste by composting and worm farming his food scraps. At 88 years young, the avid gardener has not only improved his soil health but is a prolific fruit and veg grower who boasts a bumper pineapple crop.
Almost 50% of what we throw into our household red bins is food waste. In landfill it decomposes and emits methane, a toxic greenhouse gas known to contribute to climate change.
The food we waste is made up of uneaten meals, out of date groceries, wilting fruit and veggies, mystery freezer items and excess scraps and peelings. It adds up to thousands of dollars per household each year – money literally being thrown away.
Like Dave, many of you are going the extra mile to reduce food waste and save money along the way. And we’re looking to share your stories to inspire others to do the same and reduce greenhouse gases.
Is your apartment block making composting easy for your neighbours? Are you mastering the art of pickling and preserving? Perhaps you’ve got planning superpowers or are a dedicated meal planner? Maybe you’re a leftover legend and can whip up creative recipes using your food scraps?
