Sensing the more-than-human world

Presented by Northern Beaches Council's Emerging Curator Program 2026 recipient, Nina Maskiell. 

Soft Weather brings together eight Sydney-based artists working across painting, photography, ceramics, installation and mixed media to explore our connection to the living world. 

Inspired by ecologist and philosopher David Abram's concept of the “more-than-human world,” Soft Weather invites audiences to consider the ever-changing conditions of our environment as active forces that shape how we move through and experience the world around us.

Through colour, texture, material and form, the exhibition features the work of Allan Giddy, Julie Edgar, Lisa Jones, Gabby Villalba, Charli Rose Gerry, Susie Dureau, Suzanne Davey and Aurelia King. Together, the artists offer diverse perspectives, exploring subtle environmental conditions such as weather, air, light and sound, and how they shape our experience. Many of the artists draw inspiration from the Northern Beaches, making Soft Weather a reflection on noticing, connection and ecological care.

CREATE A WEATHER COLLAGE

Children’s School Holiday Art Workshop

Join us for a creative school holiday workshop inspired by the exhibition Soft Weather. 

Following a guided introduction to the exhibition, children aged 7–9 will explore their own experiences and interpretations of weather through art. Using a range of tactile and creative materials, participants will create a sensory weather collage inspired by the colours, textures, feelings and changing conditions of their environment.

Each child will take their finished artwork home.
