Be transported into the realms of Paradise, listening to the glorious music of Fauré’s Requiem, while you travel no further than the Waterford Hall in Darley Rd, Manly, with the magnificent Sydney Harbour as a backdrop.
Distinguished flautist Bridget Bolliger and the ensemble will thrill and delight with a Flute concerto by Giovanna Pergolesi (1710-1736). In his short life, he established himself as a master of sacred music (Stabat Mater), comic opera and instrumental music. This concerto shimmers and sparkles; words cannot do justice to the sheer beauty of this musical gem. Just sit back and relax.
Favourite songs by Bach, Fauré and Sibelius, plus those by contemporary composers John Rutter and Phillip Bolliger, being influences from Australia as well as European countries over time, combine to remind us that peace is an ever present longing.
Finally, this much loved Requiem, transports us effortlessly and peacefully towards its final movement In Paradisum. This work was first performed in 1888 and several revisions followed. It was initially referred to as a “Little Mass”, as it is shorter,
and does not follow the traditional format. There are only seven movements, each embodying a sense of human tenderness and love. For example, more robust sections of the Mass such as the Dies Irae are omitted, and others inserted, such as the exquisitely beautiful Pie Jesu. This movement will be performed by the soaring talent of soprano Molly Ryan who has sung with us at our last two concerts to high acclaim. She will be complemented by Tobias Page singing the baritone solos.
As usual patrons are invited to join the choir, soloists and orchestra for drinks and light refreshments after the performance. It is a great opportunity for renewing old acquaintances and making new ones. What better way to warm up on a wintry afternoon?
