Together, we will learn how to observe and identify local bird species as part of the Aussie Bird Count – a nationwide citizen science project that you can be a part of!

In this hands-on workshop, you will:

• Take a close-up look at feathers, wings, and beaks
• Learn how to spot and identify common bird species found around the Northern Beaches
• Contribute information to real-world science projects

Whether you're new to birdwatching or already love spotting feathered visitors in your garden, this workshop will build your confidence and show you how to turn your curiosity into real acts of science.

Australian Citizen Science Association presenters:

Matthew Grace loves helping scientists and kids discover new things about the world. He works at CSIRO, where he helps build robots and computer programs that can do amazing jobs, like taking pictures of tiny insects or helping doctors understand our DNA. Matthew also helps teachers and students through teachSTEM, and he is part of big citizen science groups in Australia and around the world. He has even spoken at the United Nations about how everyday people can help collect and share important science data. Matthew believes that anyone – kids, teachers, or scientists – can work together to solve big problems and make the world better.

Dr Bridie Schultz loves finding fun ways to connect science with the real world. She has organised several research projects that help save wildlife and now works in science education to help young people, teachers, and communities get involved in hands-on science that make a difference. Through teachSTEM, Bridie runs programs where kids and community members fly drones, map forests, track frogs, and even help scientists collect real environmental data. She is passionate about making sure that every person, regardless of their background, has access to the life skills needed to navigate and actively contribute to the world around us.
