The 1000 books before schools program is a free early literacy program designed to build important literacy skills prior to starting school. The program provides goals and incentives to encourage parents and carers to read with their young children.
Northern Beaches Library Services have teamed up with other northern Sydney library services to deliver the program.
How the program works:
- A Northern Beaches library membership card is required. If you're not a member, you can begin the membership process online.
- Register for the program at your local library and receive your first reading record.
- Mark, colour or place a sticker on your reading record each time you read together with your child.
- When you have read 100 books bring your reading record into your local library and receive your ‘I’m reading 1000 Books Before School’ reading bag.
- Each time you complete milestones in your reading records, bring it into your local library to receive a merit patch for your bag.
- Every book that your child completes or listens to counts, this includes stories read at; story time sessions, day care, playgroup etc.
- We encourage you to use the children’s collections at your local libraries. However, you can read books from anywhere and read them as many times as you want, including books from other 1000 Books Before School partnering library services.
- The program finishes once your child reaches the goal of 1000 books, starts school or turns 6.
It’s achievable: Read three books a day and you will finish in less than one year. Read one book a day and you will finish in less than three years.
