If your street is looking a bit bare or there aren’t any birds chirping, it might be sign that your neighbourhood could do with a few new trees.
While the Northern Beaches has one of the greatest tree canopies in the Sydney area and a new Tree Management Policy to help protect it, we still need your help to identify potential locations for planting and watering them while they are growing.
As well as looking good, trees offer many of benefits for the community and the environment: They help improve air quality, provide shade, reduce urban heat and contribute to biodiversity.
And because it takes a tree several decades to reach maturity, it’s important that species suited to the conditions in your street are planted in the right spot, to avoid those important growing years being wasted.
Request a tree be planted in your street!
Got a spot in mind for a new tree? You can request a tree planting by contacting us. We will visit your street to work out if the location is suitable for a street tree. If it’s too close to other infrastructure or other trees, this can be an issue for the tree’s roots or the underground utility.
If your nature strip is suitable, then you can collaborate with us on suitable native species. Factors to consider include the overall street tree design, suitability to the environment and potential for maintenance.
Growing and planting a new tree.
Volunteers and staff at our community nurseries propagate local natives and planting is done in cycles during the year.
Once planted, we’ll initially manage the maintenance, including watering, mulching and protection from damage, but ask that you help us by watering the tree long-term.
