Northern Beaches Council is warning about the consequences of pollution after two incidents of water contamination in local creeks.

A creek in Belrose and another at Terrey Hills were both polluted this week, requiring a major clean-up effort from Council staff.

Both incidents have been contained and initial investigations have not found any damage to creek life.

Council General Manager Environment & Infrastructure Ben Taylor said these types of incidents impact on Council resources and are damaging to the local environment.

“It is completely unacceptable that we have seen not one but two incidents in the same week where our precious and fragile creeks have been hit with large scale pollution.

“The first incident at Belrose has seen between 500 and 600 litres of pollution discharged into the creek. Six Council staff had to spend a full day manually removing the pollution.

“Both of these incidents are being investigated and appropriate action will be taken which could include orders requiring clean up and prevention, issuing fines or court action.

“We have one of the most pristine natural environments in the world and this sort of pollution is not going to be tolerated.

“If such quick action had not been taken, the consequences for the environment could have been much worse,” Mr Taylor said.

Mr Taylor thanked the community as well as State Government agencies including Fire & Rescue, Sydney Water and the EPA.
