Northern Beaches Council has welcomed the state government announcement to provide a temporary safe house in Manly for people experiencing domestic violence.

Mayor Michael Regan said the isolation of COVID-19 had heightened many domestic violence issues.

“This announcement will literally be a life saver for many in our community who currently have nowhere else to go and cannot stay safely in their own homes,” the Mayor said.

“Most of us can only imagine what a terrifying experience the isolation of COVID-19 has been for those already suffering in abusive relationships.

“A huge thanks to all those community members whom we can’t name, for working with us, quietly lobbying government to make this a reality. This is a massive outcome for those without a voice who need protection and support right now.

“Their advocacy and commitment will make a real difference to the lives of so many.”
