Northern Beaches Council and the RMS have collaborated to complete a major roadside clean up along Mona Vale Road and Wakehurst Parkway resulting in the removal of a staggering 1.28 tonnes of litter.

It is believed that the majority of the waste originated from uncovered loads from vehicles and included plastic films, household items and other non-recyclables.

Mayor Michael Regan said he was upset by the amount of rubbish that had accumulated alongside these roads since Council’s last clean up around six months ago.

“It’s disappointing that so much rubbish has been collected as a result of the irresponsible actions of drivers.

“We are lucky to live in such a beautiful natural environment and as a community we need to be more mindful of the impact of littering.

“Can I encourage residents to be proactive in reporting litterers, and also ask drivers to safely secure materials being transported to avoid contributing to roadside litter,” Mayor Regan said.

The project was undertaken as a joint exercise between Council and RMS, under the State Government's Better Waste Recycling initiative. Council received and contributed $29,000 under the BWRF grant towards the program.

The clean up was undertaken over a week and required multiple vehicles and workers during daylight and at night.

The NSW EPA is currently running the Hey Tosser campaign to encourage people to report littering from vehicles. Fines from $250 can be issued from reports made by the public.
