The new Northern Beaches draft Memorials and Naming Honours Policy is on exhibition and Council is seeking feedback on its approach to providing a consistent and respectful way to accommodate memorials in suitable public spaces and to assess naming proposals.
Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said the Council recognises the sensitive nature of naming and memorials and the importance of providing places for reflection, healing, and connection.
“Given the communities strong connection with the environment, Council would like to encourage the planting of a tree as a memorial rather than installing plaques, signs and structures”, Mayor Heins said.
"This policy is about finding a balance between honouring our loved ones and maintaining the natural beauty and accessibility of our public spaces.
"Memorial Seats will still be available in locations that aren't already at capacity and need more seats such as sportsfields and other parks" Mayor Heins added.
The draft Memorials and Naming Honours Policy has been developed to harmonise the inconsistencies in the three former councils existing policies while supporting meaningful, respectful, and discreet ways to accommodate memorials without unreasonably affecting the community's access and enjoyment of public spaces.
The community can find more information and provide feedback on the draft Memorials and Naming Honours Policy via Council’s Your Say webpage from Friday 23 May until 22 June 2025.
