A father and son baboon sculpture made out of discarded wood, broom bristles and a bicycle seat is one of the many exceptional entries in the 2017 Northern Beaches Art Prize and has taken out the Waste to Art category.

Winners and finalists of the Waste to Art and Youth categories were announced at a combined exhibition opening and awards ceremony on Thursday 24 August.

Northern Beaches Council General Manager Planning, Place & Community David Kerr commended the overall quality of the entries across all four prize categories and thanked the judging panel for their efforts.

“The Northern Beaches Art Prize received a record number of entries this year. It’s inspiring to see such a wonderful celebration of creativity on display.

“Art and culture is well and truly alive on the Northern Beaches,” Mr Kerr said.

Visitor numbers for the earlier for the General and Small Sculpture exhibition far exceeded expectations and garnered plenty of positive feedback.

The second and final exhibition showcases the winners and finalists of the Waste to Art and Youth categories. It is open from Friday 25 August - Sunday 3 September (weekdays 10am - 5pm; weekends 10am - 4pm) at the Creative Space in North Curl Curl and offers free entry.

The public is invited to vote in the People’s Choice Awards, which will be announced on the final day of the exhibition.
