Better environmental outcomes and value for money are the benefits for residents of Northern Beaches Council following the successful tender process for Council’s recycling and resource recovery run by Kimbriki.

The waste processing tender has been awarded to waste and water management company SUEZ – formerly known as SITA – which operates 100 sites across Australia including a facility at Belrose.

Council Chief Executive Officer Mark Ferguson said the community can look forward to more effective and efficient resource and waste recovery and the extension of the life of the Kimbriki landfill by a further 20 years.

“I am proud that this partnership will not only provide great value for money to our ratepayers but also honour our environmental responsibilities by not just meeting but exceeding our mandated targets.

“Using proven technologies backed by stable end markets, we will be diverting more than 71 per cent of our waste from landfill and recovering it for beneficial reuse,” Mr Ferguson said

This includes recovering more than 55 per cent of waste from our red lidded bins destined for landfill as recyclables and organic material.

“That means the equivalent of more than 43 thousand tonnes of CO2 avoided each year, for the next 10 years.

“I’m very pleased to say that we can achieve all of this without adding upward pressure on our domestic waste management charge,” Mr Ferguson said.

Mark Venhoek, CEO of SUEZ Australia and New Zealand, also praised the environmental benefits.

“We know Northern Beaches’ residents care about their impact on the environment. We look forward to helping Council meet its 70 per cent waste diversion target by processing household waste into organics and recyclables.”

The outcome is consistent with feedback from Council’s community consultation and engagement, which indicated a strong preference for significantly higher resource recovery rates at a lower cost than originally forecast.

The tender process was subject to a rigorous assessment process.

Ben Connell, Kimbriki’s CEO said “This project has been in planning for several years and to reach this milestone is an extremely positive step for our shareholders and local residents. Kimbriki is very excited to facilitate a significant and innovative change to the way Northern Beaches waste is processed.”

The new contract is due to start in July 2019.

Kimbriki is a company with shareholders, Northern Beaches Council and Mosman Municipal Council.

SUEZ provides smart and reliable resource solutions to collect, recover and recycle waste into valuable new products and resources.  In Australia, SUEZ collects 2.2 million tonnes of waste every year and diverts more than 1.2 million tonnes of waste from landfill.
