Council is extending lighting at 17 of its sports fields to allow people to exercise safely during the current COVID-19 health restrictions.

Lighting at the selected sports fields will extend to 9pm on weekdays and 6pm at weekends.

Organised team sports are not allowed under current Health Orders. However, up to 10 people are permitted to exercise outdoors while observing minimum social distancing of 1.5 metres.

Mayor Michael Regan said with more people working from home and stay-at-home health orders currently in force, extended lighting on sports fields will help spread demand for open space exercise areas.

“This will allow people to exercise safely over longer times.

“Council is looking at ways we can help lift the burden as much as possible on people enduring the health lockdown.

“Exercise is crucial for physical and mental resilience, so we hope people take advantage of these extended hours.”
