Learn how to handle your lovable, yet mischievous, pooch at Northern Beaches Council’s free information night with animal behaviour expert Dr Kersti Seksel.

During her studies, Dr Seksel was surprised to learn that more pets die each year because of their behaviour than of infectious, metabolic and other diseases combined.

The free information evening will offer plenty of practical solutions to the many animal behaviours that can often bring stress and conflict to households and communities.

"There are many techniques and ideas that will help owners live in harmony with their animals," Dr Seksel said.

"Modifying dog behaviour such as barking, separation anxiety and other disorders can be improved with a combination of routine and reward.

"While managing the environment, and in some cases medication may be needed to help anxious dogs," she said.

This night is part of Northern Beaches Council's program of support for its dog loving community and while the night is focussed on dog behaviours, attendees are asked to leave their canine friends at home.

Dr Seksel is an adjunct professor at Charles Sturt University and honorary associate at Sydney University. She has appeared on the Midday Show, the Project and is a regular presenter on ABC radio.
