In response to recent anti-social behaviour on the esplanades in Manly at night, police and Northern Beaches Council are working together to review alcohol restrictions and increase weekend patrols.

Mayor Michael Regan said both police and Council would have a greater presence this weekend and will trial the replacement of night Rangers with additional police presence.

“Our spectacular esplanades at Manly are a great place to enjoy time with friends or family and watch the sun go down,” Mayor Regan said.

“Unfortunately lately this opportunity for a quiet drink has turned into larger group parties which go into the night - impacting on residents and resulting in other anti-social behaviour.

“Council and the Northern Beaches Local Area Command are actively working together to address the issue by increasing our presence and considering new or revised alcohol free areas.

“This weekend additional rangers will support police efforts and patrol the esplanades, beach front and reserves.

“From next week, Council will trial the replacement of night Rangers with additional police who have the training and power to shut down poor behaviour and move these groups on.

“This will support and bolster existing police operations and help prevent incidents.

“Introducing alcohol free areas can also be effective and we’ll be looking at where these might work, in conjunction with the police and the community.

“Its important people have the opportunity to enjoy our spectacular locations but it shouldn’t unreasonably impact on others.”

The trial will run until the end of April.
