Northern Beaches Council has now commenced works to build two new and exciting synthetic sportfields at Lionel Watts, Field 3 and 4.

As part of the Glen Street Open Space Masterplan the new synthetic fields will accommodate sports such as Football, AFL, Cricket and Touch Football.

Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said Council remains committed to providing more sporting fields and open spaces to the community.

“The construction of these synthetic fields is part of the implementation of the Glen Street Open Space Masterplan and is an integral part of delivering on Council’s commitment to the 2017 Northern Beaches Sportsgrounds Strategy.

“The community not only has a need, but a demand to meet the shortfall of sportgrounds in the area. Council is committed to providing the community with the opportunity to participate in sports to improve physical well-being and social connectedness.

“This site will provide sporting groups with a consistent; all weather, first class premium quality facility which will means more training and playing time for all players.

“While the short term pain of playing fields 3 and 4 being closed during the upgrade works, the long term gain will be incredible, state-of-the-art fields for the communities enjoyment,” Mayor Regan said.

The existing synthetic sportfields, located at Cromer Park, Forestville War Memorial Playing Fields and Narrabeen Sports High School, have proved to be incredibly popular with all users and provide greater capacity to meet the community needs without loss of condition through winter.

Council has also identified the opportunity to upgrade the off leash dog park at Frenchs Forest by using the high quality top soil from excavating the natural fields. The upgraded Frenchs Forest Showground will be re-turfed and have irrigation installed.

“Dogs and their owners will then have a fabulous green space to enjoy and a quality dog play experience year round even after rain,” Mayor Regan said.

The off leash dog area at the Showground will be closed between September and December 2018.

The new synthetic sportsfield is scheduled for completion in readiness for the 2019 winter season.
