Manly Art Gallery & Museum is to host an exhibition exploring the idea of ‘place over time’, featuring new works by ten artists drawing their inspiration from Sydney Harbour’s dramatic gateway headland, North Head.

The ‘North Head Project’ will focus on the area’s complex Aboriginal and cultural heritage, environmental significance, military history, and unique migration and quarantine stories.

Featured artists are Tamara Dean, Karla Dickens, Helen Earl, Craig Handley, Nathalie Hartog-Gautier, Nick Hollo, Chris Langlois, Susan Milne, Julie Nettleton and Hobie Porter.

‘North Head Project’ will be officially launched at Manly Art Gallery & Museum at 6pm on Friday 8 December, by author and broadcaster Scott Bevan.

“The headlands, waterways and history of North Head have been depicted variously over the past two centuries by artists keen to capture their beauty and drama,” said Senior Curator at Manly Art Gallery & Museum, Katherine Roberts.

“This charged site is relevant, thought-provoking and especially ripe for artists’ interpretations and reflection.

“Bringing artists together for the project at a camp on North Head in February 2017, created a real and palpable energy and frisson among the group.

“The artists who came to North Head for the first time, especially, found it deeply evocative and moving.

“Manly Art Gallery & Museum is proud to have developed such a project of regional and national significance,” Ms Roberts said.

The ‘North Head Project’ is presented by Manly Art Gallery & Museum in partnership with the Aboriginal Heritage Office Manly, Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, Q Station Manly and NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service.

Exhibition dates are 8 Dec to 18 February. Manly Art Gallery & Museum is at West Esplanade, Manly NSW 2095. The Gallery is open 10am - 5pm Tuesday – Sunday, free entry.
