The community has helped Northern Beaches Council plan for a significant upgrade at East Esplanade, Manly, with the draft landscaping plan adopted by Council at last night’s meeting.

East Esplanade forms part of the iconic Manly gateway to the Northern Beaches with its landscaped setting, open grassed areas and convenient location. Locals often refer to it as “The Office” because of its popularity as a meeting place.

Mayor Michael Regan said the plan would make for a better visitor experience and greater protection of the environment.

“East Esplanade is a popular Manly location but its current condition especially after heavy rain, needs upgrading.

“There will be better protection of trees, improved recreation areas and historic elements in the park enhanced.

“I want to thank the community for getting behind this plan. We had more than 100 people at the drop-in sessions and we’ve received more than 50 submissions, the vast majority supportive,” Mayor Regan said.

Raising the kerb and reducing stormwater runoff, new sandstone edging along the promenade to retain the grass area, enhancement of the Broken Fountain memorial area and construction of raised decks around the exposed roots of the fig trees are among the works being prioritised.

Council has allocated $200,000 this financial year for the work.
