Dee Why Beach promenade will come alive next month (April 22) thanks to a street art project with a vital message.

Northern Beaches Council has engaged multi-talented artist Anton Pulvirenti to produce street art with a message to remind the community of the harm done to the environment by people littering.

Council Deputy General Manager Ben Taylor said modern society and its disposal mentality is creating problems.

“Whether it’s those annoying little fish shaped soy bottles, single use plastic straws, plastic bottles, lids and even cigarette butts, when people are careless with them they end up in our environment. No-one wants to go to a beach or park and have to clean up after someone else first.

“And we know the harm that plastic and cigarette butts in the ocean can cause to marine life.

“This unique art work will hopefully raise awareness of the issue and encourage the community to think twice before littering our beautiful beachside environment,” Mr Taylor said.

“Anton is a gifted artist who has appeared on television, taught art and represented Australia internationally at arts festivals. I am sure the community will love his work and I urge everyone to come down and take a look.”

The artwork will be created on 22 April on the promenade at Dee Why Beach near the ping pong table at the southern end, weather permitting.

The project is an initiative of Northern Beaches Council Waste Education.
