The impact of human activity on water quality in the Northern Beaches is the focus of a new summer program of activities by Northern Beaches Council.

Mayor Michael Regan said the community loves and cares for our lagoons, beaches and marine life but may not be aware of how actions on land can impact those areas.

“Everyday items such as plastic bags, cosmetics and synthetic fibres from clothing can easily end up in our catchments and eventually our coast.

“Through a fun, interactive series of events in November, Council will help the community make the link between the everyday items we use and their impact on the places where we swim, fish and surf.

“The culmination of this program is Ocean Care Day on 3 December which aims to increase awareness of the damage that pollution can cause. Your plastic bags, bottles, even clothing and cosmetics can end up in your favourite fish dish. We have some of the finest natural environments in the world and we are determined to keep it that way,” Mayor Regan said.

The program of activities will include an aquarium tour, outdoor cinema, expert talks by scientists and story time for children.
