Wheelchair users and other people with a disability will be able to better enjoy Collaroy Beach following recent upgrades to Collaroy Surf Life Saving Club made by Northern Beaches Council in conjunction with the NSW Government.

Council General Manager Environment & Infrastructure Ben Taylor said the newly installed adult changing facilities improve the existing accessible amenities and are another step towards ensuring the Northern Beaches is inclusive to all.

“Following a $35,000 grant from the NSW Government and a further $5,000 contribution from Council we have installed state-of-the-art adult lift and change facilities at Collaroy Surf Club.

“These upgrades help to make Collaroy Beach an accessible and welcoming environment for people of all abilities,” Mr Taylor said.

The lift and change facility is now available for use. It includes an adult change table and hoist, which required installation of a steel frame and other associated building remediation works.

Minister for Disability Services Ray Williams commended the Council on their efforts to build an inclusive community.

“It’s great to see the Council prioritising accessibility for people with disability through this facility and their Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

“The Lift & Change will ensure people with disability, their carers and families are not excluded from opportunities available to everyone else,” Mr Williams said.

Member for Wakehurst Brad Hazzard also welcomed the announcement of the upgraded facility.

“Locals already know that Collaroy has come in for special attention from the local council to make the beach disability friendly.

“We also know that we have the new accessible facility for people with spinal injury just 50m from the beach.

“This new facility, compliments of the State Government, is potentially life changing in opening up accessibility for local residents and other people with a disability.

“It’s just brilliant!” Mr Hazzard said.

The updated facilities are listed on the National Public Toilet Map, Changing Places Interactive Map and on Council’s web site.
