This year Manly Art Gallery & Museum is celebrating 100 years of collecting artworks for the Northern Beaches community to share and enjoy.

Collection 100: New is the second exhibition in a series of three celebrating the major milestone – and is on display from 19 April to 9 June 2024.

Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said the exhibition includes works generously donated over the past few years by contemporary Australian artists.

“Manly Art Gallery & Museum is a beacon of creativity and generosity on the Northern Beaches,” Mayor Heins said.

“The public collection began when a committee of 12 individuals, appointed by Manly Council, raised funds to purchase and gift an impressionist painting by notable Australian artist, James R. Jackson, to the community.

“The spirit of generosity has continued, with many donors, philanthropists and artists making an indelible contribution to the public collection. Thank you to all who have given so much to share art and culture with our community.”

The exhibition includes works by Tom Carment, Adam Cullen, Kate Dorrough, Blak Douglas, Fairlie Kingston, Kathrin Longhurst, Fiona Lowry, Arthur Murch, Luke Sciberras, Hadyn Wilson and Joshua Yeldham, many of which have been donated through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program.

It takes a deep dive into the stories behind the donated works and the artists who created them.

MAG&M is the oldest metropolitan purpose-built regional gallery in NSW and was officially opened in 1930. The collection began six years prior, in 1924.
