Northern Beaches Council will open a new street skate park at St Matthews Farm Reserve, Cromer on Friday 3 March, with a free barbecue, skateboard giveaways, skating demos and lessons from 4.30 to 7.30pm. (EVENT POSTPONED TO FRIDAY 10 MARCH)

Northern Beaches Council General Manager Mark Ferguson said the new skate park has been designed in consultation with local skaters and youth.

“The input from the local skating community has been invaluable and allowed Council to build a facility that caters to novices and experienced skaters alike.

“Northern Beaches Council is really pleased to be delivering another active recreational facility that will be enjoyed by a wide range of the community for many years to come,” Mr Ferguson said.

The skate park ‘street style’ design is incorporated into the natural surroundings and provides seating, landscaping and multi-use ½ court to encourage a shared use of the space.

The new St Matthews Farm skate park includes a number of skateable elements including stairs, hubbas, euro gaps and a spine ramp.

Skater HQ will be doing demos at the opening, giving free skating lessons and providing helpful tips for how to use the new facility. All lesson participants must bring a skateboard / scooter and   helmet, and are encouraged to wear other safety equipment.

In event of bad weather the event will be rescheduled. For more information on the St Matthews Farm skate park opening download the KALOF app from the App Store or Google Play or call (02) 9942 2401.

Street Skating

Street skate parks are designed to emulate a street environment where a skater traditionally uses curbs, benches, handrails and other man-made obstacles found in suburban landscapes.

Hubba
In skateboarding terminology, a tell ledge down a set of stairs where grinds and slides are performed.

Euro-Gap
Euro-gaps or Euro-boxes consist of a bank with a flat at the top and a second, higher flat after it.

Spine Ramp
A ramp consisting of two quarter pipes back to back with a narrow spine, usually coping, separating the two.
