Brookvale Oval is set to host this weekend’s NRL semi-final between the Manly Sea Eagles and the Cronulla Sharks following a final report that has cleared the way for the game to go ahead.

The results of soil testing across the venue and the implementation of a comprehensive Asbestos Management Plan (AMP) showed there is no risk to patrons from asbestos.

Northern Beaches Council received the results and management plan on Monday after specialists were engaged to conducted a thorough assessment of the site.

This followed the discovery late last week of traces of asbestos in a few test holes which the Sea Eagles had undertaken as part of their geotechnical investigations for the proposed Centre of Excellence.

Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said community safety remained Council’s top priority.

“People’s safety is paramount which is why we engaged specialists as soon as the Sea Eagles raised the issue with us late on Thursday.

“We are really pleased that the detailed independent results have shown that Council can effectively manage the site in time for the weekend game.

“We want to assure the local community there is no risk to them from the contaminants found in the soil at Brookie Oval and that Council will do everything recommended to ensure people’s ongoing safety.

“There is no reason the game cannot go ahead as planned based on scientific testing and expert advice. We can assure the community the site will be safe ahead of the weekend’s game.

“Unfortunately asbestos is a legacy we live with underneath public parks and playing fields across this country. In this case, soil testing done beneath the surface by the Sea Eagles consultants in preparation for the Centre Of Excellence was the catalyst for further analysis.

“I am confident Brookie Oval will host a great game on the weekend and with the fantastic support of their fans, the Sea Eagles will triumph,” said Mayor Michael Regan.
