Northern Beaches Council will reintroduce the Backyard Habitat program, offering 3,000 native plants to residents, delivered contactless to their home.

Mayor Michael Regan said the Backyard Habitat program aimed to foster the growth of native habitat across our area as well as support people gardening in lockdown, in lieu of National Tree Day.

“Our Bushcare volunteers have caringly propagated around 3,000 native plants from locally sourced seeds at our community nurseries at Manly Dam and Curl Curl,” Mayor Regan said.

“These are normally used to help regenerate public bushland, parks and reserves, and as gifts for new Australian citizens and giveaways for National Tree Day.

“While these activities can’t proceed due to the COVID restrictions, we know our residents will make good use of them.

“They’ll increase habitat for birds, bees, butterflies and other native species across our area and provide enjoyment for residents.

“This program was so popular last year that we had to create a waitlist. This year priority will be given to those who missed out last time so I encourage you to get in quickly!

“The program complements other services we are offering our community at this time including the Library2U home delivery service, lighting sportsfields at night to extend their use and ongoing online webinars and events.”

The program will provide one thousand residents with three native species each, matched to the specifics of each garden.

Participants are asked to send photos of their plants once they’re established and thriving.

Northern Beaches residents can register here.
