A new NSW Government incentive aims to make it easier – and cheaper – for those owning and living in unit blocks to jump on board the solar train and reduce their power bills.
The Solar for Apartment Residents grant scheme will fund 50% of the cost of a shared solar photovoltaic (PV) system on eligible apartment buildings and other multi-unit dwellings in NSW. Grants will cover 50% of installation costs including panels, mounting, sharing technology and labour.
It’s good news for the Northern Beaches and will help bolster Council’s ambitious target to achieve solar take up in the community on 50% of suitable premises by 2030.
Installing solar on houses is on the rise locally – and statewide is over 31% - but take up on multi-unit blocks has been stubbornly low. With cost cited as a major factor the grants will help residents make the switch to solar and also to reduce their energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions.
With a pot of $25 million available – up to $150,000 in matched funding per application – only strata and owners corporation managers can apply. Residents interested in solar can build support amongst their neighbours and encourage their property managers to take advantage of the scheme.
Applications are open now until 1 December this year or earlier if funds are fully allocated. Details can be found on the NSW Government’s Climate and Energy Action website.
Local apartment residents, owners corporations and strata managers can book in for a chat with Council’s free Energy & Solar Advisory Service to learn more about renewable energy, the process and how to help your unit block make the switch.
With the scheme designed to deliver reduced electricity bills, create less greenhouse gas emissions and increase property values, it’s a win-win for both residents and the environment.
