Glen Street Theatre is looking good for its 40th anniversary this year. Built by the community for the community, it has been a hub for exceptional entertainment on the Northern Beaches since its opening on 6 July 1985.
Initially envisioned by the Forest Community Association and supported by Warringah Shire Council, the 400-seat theatre aimed to provide facilities for community groups and attract professional theatre productions.
Today, Glen Street Theatre attracts over 65,000 visitors annually and hosts close to 200 performances and events each year, fulfilling the aspirations of its founders.
Over the decades, the theatre has undergone several upgrades and improvements, solidifying its status as a nationally recognized venue. It remains a cornerstone of entertainment on the Northern Beaches and a beloved gathering place for the community.
Historical Milestones
In the 1970s, the local communities of Belrose, Davidson, and Frenchs Forest envisioned creating a cultural hub catering to local youth, performing arts, and cultural groups.
This dream led to the Forest Community Centre concept being approved in 1976, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Forest Community Association.
As stage one in 1979, the Forest Squash Centre opened. The now health club generated essential income for the project.
This was followed by the opening of the 400-seat Glen Street Theatre in 1985 as stage 2. The theatre welcomed both community groups and professional productions, enhancing the cultural landscape of the area.
By the early 1990s, Glen Street Theatre had established a professional subscription series, becoming a vital part of the Australian theatre touring network. For the past 30 years, it has been a cherished space for both community performances and professional shows.
Throughout this time, the Forest Youth Theatre Company thrived, bringing youthful energy to the professional stage.
In 2012, the community supported much-needed upgrades to the foyer and forecourt areas, marking the next stage of the Glen Street Cultural Hub.
The continued success of Glen Street Theatre has always relied on the generous support of the community and the Council.
As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Glen Street Theatre, we honour its rich history and the countless memories created in this cherished venue. Here's to many more years of laughter, drama, and inspiration!
