With 15 rockpools across the Beaches, there’s a lot that goes into keeping them sparkly. So how do we clean them?

Our crews start by draining the pool before low tide. A high pressure hose removes any algae. We sweep sand and seaweed to the drain to be washed out to sea.

We work through the night and it’s a race against time before the tide refills the pool.

Each pool clean is unique. Some can’t be fully drained, like those with a natural floor, rough conditions, marine life and sand or seaweed build up.

We rely on hightide and decent swell conditions.

The second day after a clean is often the perfect day for a dip.

Our 15 rockpools offer more than just natural beauty; they provide a unique swimming experience much loved by locals and visitors.

Alas, whether you're a seasoned swimmer looking to do laps in the saltwater or a family seeking a safe and picturesque spot for a dip, if you visit one of our pools on a day when they are not looking so clean it can be disappointing. To play it safe, it’s a good idea to look at the cleaning schedule and plan your visit around the clean.

During the warmer months, our crews are out giving all but one of them a weekly clean. Between June to August, it’s fortnightly. We work from late afternoon, through the night, to early morning to ensure they’re ready for you to enjoy your swim.

Despite a rigid and regular cleaning schedule, our ocean pools are at the whim of nature tides and conditions to complete a clean. Our pool at North Curl Curl is in a position that is too difficult for crews to access so we leave cleaning this one up to Mother Nature!

At all other pools, our crews drain the pools before low tide and use a high-pressure hose to remove any algae. We sweep sand and seaweed to the drain to be washed out to sea; it’s then a race against time before the tide refills the pool.

Each rockpool is unique and relies on high tide to naturally flush out any leftover algae from the clean. Sometimes we need to bring in pumps to help us refill our pools too. Some pools can’t be fully drained, like those with a natural floor, or during rough conditions, when marine life is present and when sand and/or seaweed is built up.
