Update 1 July, 2025, midday

The NSW SES is advising people in the following area(s) to STAY INDOORS due to damaging winds, destructive winds in Coastal Areas between Bulli and Collaroy.

You should monitor the situation as it is constantly changing.

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises a vigorous complex low-pressure system is forecast to rapidly deepen offshore of the Hunter Coast today, gradually tracking southwards offshore of the Illawarra Coast into the evening before turning and moving into the Tasman Sea during the day on Wednesday. Winds are expected to strengthen about coastal parts today, extending to inland parts of Greater Sydney this afternoon, and along the central to northern Great Dividing Range this evening. A moist southeasterly airstream is likely to strengthen on the southern flank of the system late this afternoon, bringing heavy rainfall through the southern Illawarra, South Coast and adjacent Southern Tablelands.

Locally DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS with peak gusts in excess of 125 km/h are possible this afternoon along the exposed coastal fringe of the Sydney Metropolitan area, between about Collaroy and Wollongong.

This event may change quickly. NSW SES will monitor the situation and update warnings if the situation changes.

What you need to do

  • Move or stay indoors clear of windows, bringing children and pets with you.
  • If you must travel, consider the consequences of road conditions and closures and make alternate arrangements for work, children, and travel.
  • Use stairs instead of lifts in severe weather. You may become trapped if the power goes out.
  • If your roof or balcony is struck by a fallen tree/branch or other large debris - stay clear and remain indoors if you can. It may have been structurally weakened, even if there is no obvious damage.
  • Have your emergency kit and grab and go bag handy in case you lose power.
  • If caught outdoors, shelter under sturdy cover away from lightning, hail, falling branches.
  • Stay clear of fallen trees, power lines and damaged buildings.

30th July, 2025

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued Flood Watch, marine wind and hazardous surf warnings for Sydney coastal areas over the coming days with high levels of rainfall predicted and potential coastal erosion from a developing East Coast Low.

If you live in a flood-affected area, now is a good time to check your emergency plans and be prepared.

Council is working closely with the SES and has supplied sand for the sandbag collection sites at the car parks of Denzil Joyce Oval, Abbott Rd, North Curl Curl, Balgowlah Golf Club, Sydney Rd, Balgowlah and North Narrabeen Surf Club.

Our crews are also closely monitoring conditions and are ready to respond and support SES as required in the coming days.

We have also completed inspections of critical stormwater assets across the area and cleared and prepared stormwater drains.

Narrabeen Lagoon entrance is open and we have dozers on site at Queenscliff Lagoon readying a channel for opening as per our protocol. Curl Curl and Dee Why lagoons are being monitored. Pre-releases from Manly Dam have commenced to reduce water levels below the normal operating levels.

To access real-time, locally relevant information including weather warnings, Hazards Near Me incidents, road closures, utility outages and rainfall and lagoon gauges visit our Emergency Dashboard.

A reminder to never drive through floodwaters, stay well away from stormwater drains, and regularly check the SES for alerts.
Stay safe and dry!
