With the rise of ‘dark kitchens’ – also known as ghost or cloud kitchens - in NSW, Council is encouraging anyone selling food to properly register their business.
Dark kitchens operate commercial kitchens specifically for preparing food orders for delivery, rather than serving customers face to face. They operate from homes, restaurants or other industrial premises and generally rely on social media and delivery apps for trade.
While dark kitchens offer flexibility and reduced overheads for operators, they present challenges for food safety and regulation, sometimes inadvertently avoiding Council food premises inspections and therefore risking customer safety.
The rules around food safety are strict for a reason; food poisoning can be deadly.
So, no matter how big or small, whether it’s home-based, online-only or even temporary, if you’re selling food to consumers you need to let Council know.
Notification is free but penalties may apply to those who do not comply.
How to register a food business:
- Register your business with Council using an online form.
- Understand and adhere to the requirements set out in the NSW food safety code.
- Facilitate and comply with any advice or directions following Council’s inspections.
