Switched on and shining bright: Matt from Matt Young Electrical powers ahead on the Beaches

Local sparky shares what it really takes to run a successful trade business
Matt Young  isn’t your average electrician. He’s a Northern Beaches local who has built his business from the ground up powered by strong values, trusted relationships, and a whole lot of hustle.
From wiring homes to winning long term clients, Matt’s advice is gold for any small business owner looking to grow the right way.

“I always knew I wanted to work for myself”
Matt started his apprenticeship straight after Year 12. With a self-employed plumber dad as his role model, he learned early how to use tools and how to think like a business owner.
“By my third year, I was already getting my setup ready, buying the right tools, sorting the ute. I didn’t want a big hit all at once, so I planned ahead.”

“Working on the Beaches, it’s the best”
Living and working on the Northern Beaches comes with a deep local connection — and for Matt, that’s what makes it special.
“I grew up here, so I get the people. That helps me build trust quickly. Plus, a lot of my clients are mates or mates of mates. You can’t beat that.”

“Word of mouth is everything”
Matt doesn’t rely on ads — he builds trust through great service.
“I want to be someone’s electrician for the next 20 years. That only happens if they feel the job was solid, the service was great, and they can trust me.”
That focus on relationships keeps the referrals rolling in.

“Call ahead, show up, be clean”
It’s the little things that make a big impression — and they matter.
“If someone’s taken time off to meet you, don’t leave them hanging. If you’re running late, call.
You don’t need to show up in a suit, but don’t look like you’ve slept in the van either.”

“Ask more questions, always”
One of Matt’s biggest lessons? Don’t be afraid to ask.
“Quoting, scheduling, invoicing no one teaches you that.
Ask the guys you work with. Ask the wholesaler. Most people are happy to help if you just ask.”

“It’s a long game”
Matt plays the long game and he encourages others to do the same.
“If someone spends 1,000 dollars a year with me and refers two friends who do the same, that adds up fast.
It’s compound interest for your reputation.”

“Be loyal, be decent, that’s it”
Respect goes a long way on site and in business.
“Treat people how you want to be treated. Be patient. Be honest.
Don’t act like you’re better than anyone you’re probably not.”

“Best part? The thank you text”
Matt’s worked on high end builds, but it’s the little moments that stick.
“Whether it’s a full rewire or a power point, when someone messages to say thank you or praises one of my guys, that’s what makes it worth it.”
