Our Local Studies Librarian wanted to find the location of a photograph taken in 1945 and found it with the help of a local.

This is an early photography of Newport Beach and Bungan Headland, taken from Hillside Road in Newport circa 1945.

The image shows Barrenjoey Road passing the edge of the beach as well as Newport Surf Life Saving Club and onwards to the Newport shops. Visible also is Neptune Road, Foamcrest Avenue and Coles Parade, with Bungan Castle on top of the headland.

The next image shows what the same location looks like today and we can see Newport changing from a rural area into a residential suburb. According to the local, the three houses on the low side of Hillside Road still exist except number 48.

You can always glimpse into Northern Beaches' past by browsing our local history image collection or you can also search your own past by using the online family history tools. If you have a particular enquiry, please contact our Local Studies team
