Varanus varius

Lace Monitors are one of Australia’s largest lizards and can grow up to 2m.

They are commonly called goannas and are known for scaling tree trunks. They often spend most of their adult lives in the same area.

Lace Monitors are mainly carrion eaters, feeding on dead carcasses of other wildlife. They eat insects, reptiles, small mammals, birds and eggs. They can live to over 20 years of age and are related to Komodo dragons (the two lineages are thought to have diverged about 13 million years ago).

They are mainly active from September to May and shelter in tree hollows or under fallen trees or large rocks in cooler weather.
