The ABC TV show 'Old People’s home for 4-year-olds' was an international hit. A social experiment that paired seniors in a retirement community with 4-year-olds, highlighting the physical and health benefits of intergenerational connections.

And whether you’ve heard of the show or not but are intrigued by the concept – and you’re at the magic age of 65 or older – you’re invited to apply to join in a similar but local project starting soon.

The Integrity Trial is an intergenerational research collaboration between The George Institute for Global Health and the University of NSW.

Aimed at improving health outcomes for older adults and developmental skills of preschoolers, the 10-week program will see Council educators facilitate weekly hour-long sessions developed, supported and observed by researchers, psychologists and educators.

Designed to help adults and children have meaningful engagement, activities will include thinking games, songs, craft, team activities and dancing.

It’s a welcome opportunity for the preschoolers – some who have no grandparents living locally – to connect with and learn from an older generation. And for the older participants, it’s hoped the project will improve social connections, mental health and confidence leading to better outcomes for independent living.

Council’s participation in this project aligns with strategic actions in the current Children’s Services Strategy aimed at improving opportunities and outcomes for children. And educators are eagerly awaiting the start of the project.

There are still a few spots left for the program at The Roundhouse in Manly with anyone over 65 with good levels of fitness and cognition encouraged to apply.
