Between 22,000 and 30,000 cubic metres of sand, or around 10 Olympic swimming pools full, will be removed near the mouth of Narrabeen Lagoon over the next few months to help reduce flood risks at this stunning waterway.

Even though the Lagoon naturally opens and closes at the mouth, Council regularly clears large build ups around the Ocean Street Bridge based on our Narrabeen Lagoon Entrance Management Strategy.

To make it happen, the mouth of the Lagoon will be closed to the ocean temporarily and Birdwood Park carpark (on the southern side of Ocean Street Bridge) will be closed to the public while works are undertaken. Additionally, there will be a compound and truck loading area on the beach adjacent the caravan park for sand removed on the western side of Ocean Street Bridge.

The excavated sand will be transported over to Collaroy-Narrabeen Beach using Mactier Street and the Collaroy Beach Reserve, while a smaller amount of sand will be moved to Lagoon Street Reserve.

Council and its contractor are teaming up to minimise impacts like noise and dust and will make sure pedestrian detours are handled properly. This project is all part of an ongoing strategy to manage the lagoon entrance, with support through the Commonwealth Government NSW Flood Recovery and Resilience Grant Program.

Everything should be wrapped up before the December school holidays, as long as the weather plays nice. If you want to know more, check out the Council’s website.
