The updated Memorials and Naming Honours Policy offers a more consistent and respectful way for the Northern Beaches community to remember significant people and events. With strong local support for better clarity and sensitivity, the Policy makes it easier to honour individuals in ways that reflect community values and provide meaningful spaces for remembrance.
One of the key changes is a flexible approach to memorials. Now, families can seek Council approval for memorial benches at sportsfields or other spots where a seat is needed. There’s also the option to plant memorial trees in suitable locations, creating sustainable tributes that grow with the community. To further enhance remembrance, plaques can be added if approved, making stories and legacies accessible for future generations.
When it comes to naming parks and public areas, Council is aligning with the NSW Geographical Names Board by prioritising names that reflect community, culture, and the environment. That means a move towards Aboriginal words, references to local flora and fauna, and geographical features, rather than using individual names for these spaces.
This updated Policy has been shaped by valuable community feedback, ensuring it celebrates the area’s natural beauty and diverse heritage. The focus is on making the Policy inclusive, honouring the past, and being mindful of today’s expectations. The process is designed to be transparent and fair, giving families opportunities to commemorate loved ones while keeping public spaces accessible and welcoming for everyone.
