The hit ABC podcast Conversations has delivered hundreds of compelling stories since its inception nearly 2 decades ago. It’s gentle conversational format transforms celebrities – and in more recent years everyday people - into storytellers, and has built a compelling compendium of human-interest stories on many subjects.

But if you’re looking for a similar format with a uniquely local twist, then another podcast could be right up your street, literally!

From a broadcaster whose life changing accident as a teen evolved to a life of purpose and community, to a chef whose passion for culinary excellence led to meaningful bonds centred on the universal language of food. An Iranian refugee persecuted for her Baha’i faith whose escape to the Northern Beaches helped her path to connection and belonging, to an American model who turned her back on a big life to focus on small everyday deeds to make an impact.

Humans of the Northern Beaches podcast is a foray into the diverse lives and voices of everyday locals, drawn to the Beaches from all corners of the globe. Its hosts Maria, Margaret and Nancy are participants in the We Belong: Intercultural Community Leaders Program that spawned the podcast.  Together they invite guests to share their experiences of living locally and the actual and metaphorical journeys that brought them here.  The result is an intimate and compelling window into what makes the Northern Beaches diverse, vibrant and unique.

Each episode turns the spotlight on a different person, unearthing heartfelt stories of adversity, creativity, wit and resilience leaving you inspired to be more open and curious to your neighbours and others around you.  The format is relaxed and conversational, the characters and their journeys diverse and insightful. Themes of identity and personal growth, migration and culture and more are explored across the series, underpinned throughout by community and connection.

The podcast is produced by Northern Beaches Council and is funded by the NSW Government through the NSW Social Cohesion Grants for Local Government. You can listen to the series on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you usually listen to podcasts.
