Bin day took an unexpected turn with a garbage truck needing to make an emergency stop after the contents caught fire this morning.

The blaze was sparked by an electric lawn mower with a lithium‑ion battery being placed in a red‑lid bin. Fortunately, it was diverted off the roads and the load safely tipped and extinguished thanks to the help of NSW Fire & Rescue.

Improper battery disposal is dangerous and incidents like these put staff and the rest of the community in danger. Please remember to keep batteries including those embedded in appliances, tools, vapes and toys out of bins and clean ups. Instead, batteries should be dropped at a safe designated battery recycling point to prevent fires.

By properly recycling hazardous items we help keep our streets safe and support responsible waste management. Visit our waste page for more information.
